Finally, some new frames for home

9 May

A home isn’t home for me until I have decorated the walls in art work, mine, your’s, Henry’s, its all good because I just love collecting prints, paintings and postcards that are beautiful. Its never been quite so important to me to hang frames as it is in the new house because the walls are covered in outstandingly ugly textured and painted wallpaper, the place is full of it. I’ve been putting off putting anything up because of not wanting to make holes in the walls with nails and get charged for any damage that might be caused to the precious wallpaper but I can’t stand it any longer, I just can’t look at this hideousness anymore!
So far this is what I’ve got, a hemisphere map which is a sheet of wrapping paper I bought in a paper store back in California a year or so ago. A table of baking measurements that my darling husband who knows me so well bought back from Hatch Show Print in Nashville, Tennessee a couple of years ago and has only just made it into a frame. Three large and beautiful printed greetings cards of Santa Cruz and the boardwalk from the same paper store in CA and three from a shop in Brighton depicting beer swilling beach folk in old Brighton when it was a mere fishing town back in the day. All of these images makes me so happy and I’m so pleased they have finally reached their proper homes behind glass.

I haven’t worked out where they are going quite yet except the measurements one which belongs in the kitchen I think but I’ll keep you posted and any suggestions would be great. I couldn’t help but have a little browse about whilst I was online and ‘accidentally’ found a few other images that would be perfect for covering fugly wallpaper, here, here and here. Oh dear, I think I’m going to need some more frames.

Fantastic Find…

2 Mar

I must be feeling pretty patriotic since moving back to England because I was in Marks and Spencer home department today and totally fell for this new range designed by Fiona Howard. I only sprung for the tea towel set by I can feel the mugs calling me back already…

Adorable right? And only £6 each.

On High in Santa Cruz. Part II

20 Feb

Furnishing this apartment was such a lot of fun. The square footage of the living room alone was just over 1,000 sq ft and with such an open plan arrangement it was possible to create a really interesting and easygoing living space.

On High in Santa Cruz. Part I

11 Feb

We signed a one year tenancy agreement on the upper floor of this beautiful big house in March 2009 the day before we found out I was pregnant. I had dreamt of living on the California coast since we arrived in America so when this place became available in beautiful Santa Cruz we just went for it and moved in as soon as we could.

New sofa for me!

3 Feb

I recently ordered this super stylish sofa from Sofa Workshop and today got a call saying it would be delivered in the second week of February, hooray!

It’s called the ‘Fancy Nancy’ (love it!) and we are having it covered in this beautiful deep brown leather (double love it!).

I’m counting the days…

Left my apartment in San Francisco

15 Jan

I’m counting down to the glorious day when all our things are delivered next week and I thought it might be fun to do a little retrospective of the different homes we have lived in over the last few years.

When we first moved out to California we started out in a one bedroom (ever so slightly more spacious than a studio) at Pine and Mason on Nob Hill in San Francisco. Moving on such short notice and not long out of college we really didn’t have any stuff so we flew out with nothing more than two backpacks full of clothes – we really were starting from scratch. As I say, being recent students of course we headed straight for Ikea but it didn’t take us long to discover the wonders of shopping in San Francisco. The thrift stores, Crate and Barrel, Restoration hardware, Pottery Barn and my personal favourite, picking up one of a kind bargains on Craigslist.

The kitchen has to be my favourite room in any house and this one, not so discreetly hidden behind louvered doors was no exception. I’m pretty sure no one who had ever rented the flat before us had used the kitchen, you really didn’t need to as the apartment is right on the borders of downtown and within easy walking distance of some of the best restaurants in one of the foodiest cities I have ever been to. But this is me we are talking about and my kitchen is my sanctuary. Its where I retreat when I’m stressed and where I head when I’m relaxed and looking for a new project. Happy or sad, you can always find me in the kitchen. So the mission to turn this cupboard with its three electric burners and  small cave like oven in to a family style kitchen became my mini obseesion for a while.
